What You Need to Know About the Laws of Learning

E.L Thorndike is among the developers of educational philosophy and he is the one who came up with the three laws of learning. These laws have been accepted by many people and you will realize that they are applicable in all types of learning. The different modes of learning include law of exercise, law of readiness and also the law of effect. The law of intensity, law of primacy and law of recency were later included by Thorndike. For a learner to be successful, then all their needs must be met. Without this requirement, there is little that the instructor can do to motivate the learner. If an instructor wants to make their students ready then they need to begin by communicating what the objectives are and then align the different topics to the set objectives. As an instructor, you will therefore need to know those moments when it is appropriate to teach. The law of effect is crucial when it comes to learning. If the responses are followed by discomfort, then the effect will be weakened and subsequently when an occurrence is followed by satisfaction, then the effect is strengthened. For the student, experiences of frustration, discomfort, confusion and anger are not appropriate.

You need to note that exercise is crucial because that is what strengthens connections. For the learner, they need to practice whatever they have learned and this is what will promote their learning and understanding. Another law of learning is law of primacy and here is where being first is crucial. For the instructor, they need to teach correctly and for the student they need to learn correctly as well in the first time. To make learning a good experience, there is need for intensity and this includes incorporating real world scenarios in the learning process. A leaner will manage to remember the things that they learnt recently and this is where the law of recency comes in. As an instructor, you need to understand the law of recency and you should therefore have a summary of what has been taught. During the summary, you will need to restate, repeat and emphasize some of the important points at the tail end of the lesson and this is what will help the learner to remember. If you want the learner to perform well, then you need to schedule the learning or training close to the actual scenario.
